  • Sarmad Fiction Writing Club is a community for writing and sharing fiction, particularly for (visual) artists.
  • To us, "fiction" is any piece of creative (non-factual) writing that makes you turn the pages and read on, simple.
  • This club is all about “flash fiction” (very short pieces of fiction).
  • To join this club, write us an email.

Why we started this writing club
It has long been established that “image” has dimensions beyond the “literal" (the “graphic”) image. We, as visual artists, read the “theory” all the time and are well aware that the realm of visuality encompasses “verbal”, “perceptual” and “mental” imagery; that visuality is not limited to only what the eye can see.
However, in practicing “visual arts”, many times we seem to restrict ourselves only to the "literal"; anything that cannot be “seen” seems to be outside the limits of “visual arts”.
That was the basic inspiration for creating this fiction writing club. We would like to argue that creative writing, and in this case, writing fiction, is a totally valid practice within the confines of the discipline of visual arts.

How the club works
  • Each member can submit one flash fiction per round.
  • Flash fiction in this club is defined as any fictional story under 600 words.
  • Each member is a judge too and can vote for their favorite stories in each round.
  • The story with the highest votes (first winner) receives 200€. The second highest voted story (second winner) receives 100€.
  • As the submission period of each round ends, we circulate the submitted writings within the club, and then the voting begins.
  • There is no limitation on genre or form. No need to fit any definition. Crazy and weird stuff is highly encouraged.
  • All the working procedure will be digital.
  • Submitting and voting in each round is optional, obviously.

Publishing
  • Online Publication: the winner stories, together with other selected stories, will be published on Sarmad website and social media.
  • Physical Publication: at the end of the year, the collection of all the selected stories will be published as a physical booklet, or an 'anthology'.

This project in 2021 is kindly supported by Mondriaan Fonds and CBK Rotterdam.
