Episode 3 - Tribal Baroque, the Ultimate Non-normative Creative Makers

For this 3rd episode, we were really honored to have a two-hour talk with Tribal Baroque, a duo (currently based in San Francisco, CA) consisting of S.K. Thoth and Lila'Angelique.

Using countertenor and coloratura vocals, they create moving music accompanied by theater, dance, foot-percussion, and violins.

They operate completely independently, and if you want to categorize what they do it would fall under street performing but these guys are no ordinary street performers. They call what they do "prayforming".

This episode is in two parts.

This podcast is very special for us. These two beautiful beings are healers, and they not only exercise a fundamentally non-normative artistic practice but also have found and stick to a non-normative way of being in this world that is so exceptional and inspiring in this day and age.

2002 Oscar winner Thoth, countertenor and violinist, has been prayforming for over 30 years.

Lila'Angelique, coloratura soprano and violinist, has been prayforming with Thoth for more than 12 years, first as mentee, then married in 2015.

Thoth and Lila have traveled extensively and have performed in tunnels, streets, under bridges, doorways or other places whose acoustics suited them. The music they create you can’t really name or define, while it’s also a mix of many transcendent voices and elements, resonating from different ages and regions, from shaman’s rituals to classic operas, stretching up to the celestial, down to the tribal.

They only do improvisations based on their tacit understanding of each other and that can easily blow your mind away if you see them live.

In the 2 hours interview, we didn’t really talk about the technicalities of their music but Thoth and Lila generously shared a lot about their past, the different forms of oppression that they went through and which led them to choose this particular way of living, their precarious and unstable life as independent artists, and much more.
This podcast reveals a long, difficult, beautiful and truly inspiring life journey.
