Amid Salt Water

Αυτοί που θά `ρθουν μια βραδιά
Those who will arrive one night

Those who will arrive one night

will find our tears wounds they will find and smoke

and ashes our joy

And even if they rob me of my voice,

my grief I will leave behind

And if estranged my grief becomes,

my dream I will leave behind

And even if they take my years

they will remain in my blood;

and if my blood turns to water

the birds will drink it.

My niece was waiting for me to open my eyes.

I got out of bed. She stood in front of me, blocking my way.

She looked right at me with her large, sparky eyes.

She grabbed my two hands with urgency and said, "Mad Clip died!" I frowned and asked who this was. I passed her, walked into the hallway.

I took a left towards the kitchen.

She followed me. "Mad Clip, the rapper!", she answered.

I asked, "Who is this love? I don't know him, was he any good? Maybe we can listen to one of his songs."

I grabbed a glass and filled it with water from the tap.

I took a sip. She was staring, still urgent.

"I am sorry love; I really don't know him. Go fetch my phone and play one of his songs.", I said.

She stood behind me the entire time. I took a left and went outside to the yard.

Briefly, I looked on my right, at the ocean and immediately ahead again.

My mother was sitting by the table.

Elbow on the table, cigarette between her fingers and her head leaned against her thumb.

The other hand was laying on her leg.

Now, at the door opening stood my niece. Between kitchen and yard.

She pressed play on one of Mad Clip's tracks.

I stood there, looking at my mom.

She turned her head slightly towards me, still leaning on her thumb. She looked exhausted.

I said, "Good morning, how's it going?"

"Mikis Theodorakis died today.", She announced.

And she took a long drag, one eye closed to prevent smoke from getting in, the other one half-open, looking at me.

The song was playing.

I looked behind me, at the child. Her eyes wide open, full of life. Speaker at hand.

I looked ahead at the elder. Her temple on the thumb, eyes closed. And I stood in the middle of this.
